We each have a unique, God-given design struggling to be released into reality. Our hard-wiring from God is tucked inside our DNA. This primary spiritual gift is the lens through which we view the world, process information, and filter communication. Understanding our “manufacturer-installed hardware” is critical to fulfilling our calling and living a life of purpose in the Kingdom of God.
There are three lists of gifts in the Bible: design gifts (Romans 12:4-9), manifestation gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-10), and ministry gifts (Eph 4:11). Our design gifts, sometimes call redemptive gifts, are listed in Romans 12:6:
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve, if it is teaching, then teach, if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
One of these seven gifts - prophet, servant, teacher, exhorter, giver, ruler/leader, mercy - represents the main way you view life, who you truly are, and the filter for your spiritual focus. “These gifts are your ‘hard-wiring’ from God,” said Arthur Burk, in “Designed for Fulfillment” by Charles R. Wale, Jr.
Ask God to show you which one is your primary gift. One is not better than the other, simply different.
You probably connect best with one of these gifts. Lean into your strengths and don't focus on your weakest areas. God wants to mature us in all things, and His Spirit will help us learn. As we grow in our walk with Christ, the Holy Spirit works in us, disciplining, refining, teaching, until we display more and more the fruit of the Spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23
For example, perhaps you’re good at leading, with great administrative skills, but showing mercy isn’t your strength. Pursue your administrative gifting but allow God to temper your lack of mercy. He wants to bring our whole being into balance where we can excel but also display the fruits of the Spirit.
This fun quiz will help you hone in on your primary design gifting. Understanding your God-given design will help you unlock your full potential in the Kingdom of God.
