Inspect Your Life for Structural Lies
Updated: Feb 19
When God first started whispering to my heart about structure, I was confused. Structure seems a bit technical and gritty, out of my wheel house. Then He began applying the principles to my spiritual life, and my understanding started to clarify.
Let's take a closer look…God is taking us somewhere important.
Structure – (partial definition from Merriam-Webster) The arrangement of particles or parts in a substance or body...the aggregate of elements of an entity in their relationships to each other.
Structure is the framework of all creation.
Structure is necessary to construct anything – a building, the universe, an atom, a novel, a marriage, the ocean, a she shed, the kingdom of God, a lie. All things have structure – components that comprise the whole.
If any part of an entity’s structure is faulty, the integrity of the whole is compromised. The faulty component must be repaired or replaced.
In our Christian walk, a wrong belief, a lie, will compromise our spiritual house as well. The lie must be identified, repaired, and replaced with the truth. That one faulty lie, like a home with faulty electrical wiring, is in danger of destruction given the right (or wrong) circumstances.
We need to examine our spiritual structure. Laying a solid foundation for our Christian walk is extremely important, but likewise is building a solid framework for our spiritual home. God wants us to discern His pattern for living a blessed life, which means the lies must be uncovered and rejected.
Is our house soundly built on Truth?
Think yellow caution tape here…
WARNING: For all God’s children, imminent danger awaits if the structural lies aren’t uncovered, repaired through personal repentance, and replaced with Truth.
Structural lies are those which compromise the integrity of our spiritual house. When storms come, and they are inevitable, our structure could collapse if it is not built soundly on Truth. If a basic premise in your life is not grounded on God’s moral law, it will not stand when tested.
A house built on Truth will stand. A house built on lies will fall.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27
The past two weeks have been crazy here in Oklahoma, and across the country. Record-breaking floods are swamping the heartland and devastating tornadoes have swept the plains. Images of structures crumbling into churning waters have been heartbreaking. Storms happen. All social and economic levels have been affected as wind and water ravage homes and businesses. Only the sturdiest structures stand.
Even if our spiritual house is mostly sound, one lie can compromise our structural integrity, like removing a supporting beam or a load-bearing wall. The structure may be fine until pressure is applied, then the wall or roof will collapse, causing damage to the whole house and possibly triggering complete collapse.
We need to ask God to inspect our spiritual structure carefully and give us discernment to reveal the lies we have believed as truth. When that discernment comes, through the Bible, through fellow believers, through that still, small voice from God, then we need to change our minds and believe the truth instead.
This is repentance –confessing our faulty belief in a lie and changing our minds to conform to what He says is true.
Believe the Truth!
Then your house will be sound, and you will stand strong during the inevitable storms of life.
Over the next few weeks, I will be writing more in-depth about the"Ten Most Common Structural Lies" we need to discern in our lives and replace with Truth.
