Trust the Master Storyteller with Your Story

I love redemptive stories of noble quests like The Lord of the Rings, Les Miserables, The Chronicles of Narnia, Legends of the Guardian King, While You Were Sleeping. Okay, maybe not that last one (but I love it). Fantastical stories of redemption and adventure which are steeped in meaning – yes, please.

How I have longed for a life like that…not just a book where I can lose myself in the pages temporarily. I’ve read Karen Hancock’s Legends of the Guardian King series at least five times. If you love fantasy with a Christian theme, trust me on this one.

Call me idealistic to dream about living a life like that, but I have. I do. And dreams become reality if you pursue them long enough. As I look behind me, I realize I truly have devoted my entire life to a holy quest. Maybe I searched in all the wrong places at first, but God saw my seeking heart and rescued me from making any terrible life choices.

My quest led to Jesus.

I sigh as even the mention of His name fills me with incredible peace, deep down joy, and the knowing that I am fully known and completely loved.

I found Him early in life, so how has that pursuit been a holy quest, a lifelong adventure? Like finding a treasure map, God reveals His Word in measure, to tantalize and entice, to enthrall and delight us to follow His path, explore the next bend in the road, to dig here or there for buried jewels. The joy of discovery keeps me searching. His treasure box is bottomless.

How delightful, challenging, crazy, exciting, mysterious, and fulfilling this quest has been! The agony of defeat and the bliss of victory – all blended into a complex tapestry of battles and crownings.

From pits to thrones. The quest between the two is my story, just as it is for numerous men and women in the Bible. It’s your story too.

  • Joseph’s journey from the literal pit where his brothers threw him led him to become second only to Pharaoh in Egypt.

  • David’s path from herding sheep to running for his life from King Saul led him to be crowned ruler over Israel.

  • Rahab the harlot’s decision to protect the Israelite spies, saved her life and her family, and she became a great-grandmother of Jesus.

So many others, from the Bible and history, have experienced this incredible journey from the pit to the throne room.

What’s your story?

Are you lost in the middle somewhere? Sometimes it’s hard to clearly see the emerging patterns and plot lines when we’re living the day-to-day.

That’s why it’s so important to let God be the Author and Finisher of our story. He alone causes our crazy lives to make sense. He knows how to bring resolution to the plot’s twists and turns and pull the story line back to a happy conclusion.

One of my favorite lines in “While You Were Sleeping” is when Sandra Bullock is standing in the Emergency Room watching orderlies take her fantasy boyfriend behind closed doors. She sighs and says to herself, “I was going to marry that guy.” Her quiet musing results in hilarious consequences.

Spoiler Alert: Our lifelong quest may not play out the way we imagined.

However, you can trust the Master Storyteller with your story. He weaves a masterful story with a powerful conclusion.

Every time.
